Dancer / Performer

by Josh Tomalin

Born and raised in Iceland, Íris began her dance training at the age of 3. After graduating from the National Ballet School of Iceland in 2018, Íris went on to study at Rambert School in London, where she graduated in 2021 with a first class BA (Hons) in Ballet and Contemporary Dance. The following year she did her MA at University of Salford, while dancing with Emergence Postgraduate Company under the direction of Joss Arnott, touring a mixed bill of work by choreographers Kevin Finnan, Vidya Patel, and Gosia Mielech, as well as a restaging of Joss Arnott's piece Wild Shadows.

In the summer of 2023, Íris got a contract with the Austrian dance group Tanz Company Gervasi and performed the piece Brown-1 both in Italy and in Vienna. Lately, Íris has worked on various dance and art projects in Iceland and abroad, including the dance piece Svartir Fuglar by Lára Stefáns, performance with Genevieve Nolan at Galleri Ramfjörd and choreographing for the Reykjavik Art Festival (see CV for detailed overview). Currently she is also part of the newly founded project based company Ballet Axis, under the direction of Sally Cowdin.

As well as performing, Íris teaches at various institutions, including the Iceland University of the Arts.

Íris has great appreciation of technique, and detailed, physical dancing. Her movement language has been described as smooth, elongated, and dynamic. She enjoys to work musically and rhythmically, and has great interest in the relationship between music and movement.

As a dance artist, Íris believes in using movement and dance as a form of expression, and portraying emotion, by giving each movement its purpose and value. Having been described as a 'captivating, unapologetic, and elegant performer', she strives to move the audience, by sparking something new within each spectator.

Íris has attended summer schools, including Alonzo King LINES Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. During her time at Rambert School, she had the opportunity to work with Julie Cunningham for her piece Slant, which was scheduled to be performed at Sadlers Wells in March 2020. In her third year Íris also worked with choreographers Vidya Patel and Cameron McMillan for Rambert Schools ‘Next Generation’ performance, which was performed at the Royal Opera House and Anya Linden Studio Theatre. Furthermore, in her final year at Rambert School, Íris recieved the Lionel Bart Foundation scholarship award.

Íris is a certified barre instructor from The Barre Collective in London, and has been teaching classes, workshops, and at events alongside her dancing.
